Each spring, they return to the UK in April with one priority: finding a safe place to nest. Sadly, suitable nesting sites are becoming increasingly scarce as old buildings are renovated or demolished, farm buildings are converted, and traditional swallow nests are removed during ‘tidy-up’ work. Providing a dedicated swallow nest cup can make a real difference. This open-fronted swallow nest cup is designed to replicate a traditional mud nest and is fixed to an internal wall or beam inside an enclosed area such as a porch, garage, barn or outbuilding. It should be positioned where swallows can easily access it through an open door or window. Once sited, the male swallow will circle the nest cup, calling to attract a female. For best results, allow a minimum distance of 1 metre between nest cups.
