The renowned Knoll family winery is located in Unterloiben in Austria's beautiful Wachau wine region. The estate, which also includes a restaurant, extends across approximately 14 hectares of vineyards spread across steep terraces between Loibenberg, Kreutles, Schütt, Pfaffenberg, and Kellerberg. Riesling and Gruner Veltliner dominate, alongside other local and international varietals such as Chardonnay, Rivaner, Gelber Muskateller, Gelber Traminer, and Pinot Noir. The Gruner Veltliner grapes for the Vinothekfullung Smaragd are selected from the estate's finest vineyards (Loibenberg, Kellerberg, and Kreutles). Here, the terraced vines benefit from soils composed of loess, slate, and primary rock, and a Pannonian climate tempered by Atlantic sea breezes. Harvesting takes place relatively late in the season to ensure the production of rich, robust wines. In the glass, the wine reveals an intense and complex aromatic character with notes of Williams pear, quince, and candied apricot interspersed with hints of honey and smoky nuances. On the palate, it is rich, concentrated, and elegant, with a creamy texture and sharp acidity. It is powerful and characterful, with a long, intense finish reminiscent of honeyed notes. Leave it in the cellar for a few years, or if you can't resist, try it with Indian cuisine.
