Drink it now or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant, but best to open it half an hour before service. Domaine Groffier estate in Morey-Saint Denis has been in the hands of the Groffier family for four generations, with many prized plots added in the 1930s by Jules Groffier. Today it’s one of the most important names in Côte de Nuits thanks to the efforts of father and son team Robert and Serge. In total they have 8 hectares of prime parcels including Bonnes Mares and Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Their coveted Bourgogne Pinot Noir shows off the family’s reputation for exceptional quality at reasonable prices for top tier Burgundy. Grapes are sourced primarily from Vougeot and Morey St Denis with cold maceration for up to seven days before fermentation to delicately extract color, flavor and tannins. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with natural yeasts followed by ageing in two year old oak barrels. On the nose subtle hints of crushed rose petals are layered with ripe raspberry, redcurrant and earthier hints of undergrowth and tobacco. A vivacious streak of acidity provides balance for the rich fruit core, along with elegant tannins and a medium body that make this bottle a natural keeper for the next couple of years. Alternatively you can enjoy it now paired with game dishes or rich stewed and braised red meats.
