Cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant before serving. The sun-baked Salento region is the kingdom of the Primitivo grape, one of the few varieties that thrives in these desert-like conditions without becoming jammy or cloying. Masseria Capoforte was founded by businessman Ettore who recognised the potential of this estate and a deep passion for the art of winemaking. This classic Primitivo is crafted with fruit from a single vineyard site close to the coast where cooling sea breezes help moderate the intense summer heat. This keeps the alcohol level and residual sugar to very modest levels, and ageing in large oak casks for 18 months adds further polish and elegance. The vines grow on sandy clay soils that drain well and further concentrate the fruit flavours. In the glass you’ll immediately notice the deep inky hue that is so typical of the Primitivo grape from southern Italy. On the nose there are complex layers of ripe dark cherry, plum and blueberry seasoned with hints of vanilla, cigar box spice, and cocoa powder from the barrel. There’s a sturdy full body and ample tannins which makes this a great partner for rich beef or game dishes and hard aged cheeses.
