Benjamin Leroux Vosne Romanee 2018

152

Drink it now or cellar for up to 20 years. No need to decant, but best to open it half an hour before service. With a glittering career that began at the tender age of 15 working in the vineyard, Benjamin Leroux is today regarded as the “spiritual heir” of the legendary Henry Jayer. His golden touch became aparrent aged just 24 when he took over from his mentor Pascal Marchand at Domaine Comte Armand. His first vintage there cemented his reputation for producing some of the finest wines anywhere in Burgundy. Since 2007 he has poured his heart into his own winery in Beaune where he makes sublime Burgundies across the spectrum from superb Bourgogne Rouge to princely Grand Crus. Leroux takes a thoroughly modern approach, focusing on freshness and finesse and purchasing only the grapes that meet his lofty standards each vintage. This silky Vosne-Romanée is a complex patchwork of top-tier plots including two that sit right below the northern 1er Crus of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Leroux vinifies each plot individually and ages the wines in predominantly used oak barrels for a more gentle touch. Expect a delicate medium body and graceful tannins overlaid with perfumed notes of rose petals, strawberries, and redcurrants. This is a great introduction to this rising star that will continue to develop beautifully in the cellar over the next couple of decades.
