The Markowitsch family has a long winemaking tradition and today cultivates approximately 65 hectares of vineyards located in the Carnuntum region, in Lower Austria. Here the vines can benefit from a warm and dry climate due to the low rainfall which results in fresh, fragrant, and elegant wines. The wine is a blend of Zweigelt, Merlot, and Blaufränkisch, from different areas of the Rosenberg vineyard. Blaufränkisch and Merlot are sourced in the upper area, where the soil is more sterile and gravelly, while Zweigelt comes from the lower area, where the soil is more clayey and deep. The name of the vineyard refers to the wild rose bushes that grow on the banks of the plot. After manual harvesting, fermentation occurs spontaneously in wood and the finished wine then rests in oak barrels of various sizes for 20 months. The Ried Rosenberg 1OTW Erste Lage is a powerful and intense wine with a broad and fragrant aromatic profile. On the nose, it reveals notes of small ripe red berries, juniper, and cloves. On the palate, it is round and elegant, concentrated and balanced. It has firm and well-integrated tannins and a long, slightly spicy finish. It is excellent with braised beef, wild boar goulash, and marinated venison steak.
