Markowitsch M1 2021

86

Drink it now or cellar for up to 25 years. It is recommended to decant it for at least one hour. Located in Göttlesbrunn in the Carnuntum region, Markowitsch is one of Austria's historic wineries. The family has been involved in viticulture for over 2 centuries. Today, the vineyards, cultivated organically, extend over approximately 65 hectares. The M1 wine is a blend dominated by Merlot, with additions of Blaufränkisch. The grapes come from the Aubühl site at 210-250 meters above sea level. Here the vines sink their roots into calcareous soils, with a slight presence of clay. The southwest exposure and the microclimate (the warmest in the Arbesthaler Hills) guarantee the full ripening of the grapes and the production of a very juicy wine. After selection and manual harvesting, fermentation occurs spontaneously in wooden containers. The finished wine then rests for 2 years in a mix of barriques and large barrels. On the nose, the wine reveals an intense, broad, and complex aromatic profile with fruity notes of raspberry, plum, cherry, and blackberry, followed by hints of tobacco, spices, orange peel, and some cedar in the background. On the palate, it is rich, full, and well-structured. It has a lively refreshing acidity and firm tannins. It is elegant, balanced, and concentrated, with a long, slightly savory finish. It is the ideal wine to pair with red meat stews.
