Drink it now or cellar for up to 25 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. Le Vieux Donjon is a French winery located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Rhone Valley. Founded in the late 70s by Lucien and Marie-José Michel, through the union of their families plots, the company is now managed by their children Claire and Francois. The estate's vineyards extend over 15 hectares, where red varieties dominate. Chateauneuf du Pape by Le Vieux Donjon is an elegant wine, produced from a blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. The grapes are harvested by hand from vineyards planted on clay-limestone and sandy soils. After fermentation in cement tanks at a controlled temperature, the wine rests in 50hl vats for 12-18 months. In the glass, the wine reveals a dense and deep color with purple hues. Its aromatic profile is led by the Grenache with notes of red and dark fruits (raspberry, redcurrant, and blackberry) and fragrant hints of Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, it is concentrated and round, intense and harmonious with soft tannins and a long and persistent finish that recalls fruity and slightly spicy notes. It is a characterful and balanced wine that can evolve beautifully in the cellar for a couple of decades. If you can't wait, enjoy it with roast lamb.
