Champagne Paul Bara Grand Millesime Grand Cru 2018

49

Enjoy it now, or cellar for 10 years or more. No need to decant before serving. This Grand Cru Champagne is composed of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. It has a charming and graceful character, made from the finest grapes in the aptly named commune of Bouzy. It opens with scents of wildflowers, cut grass, and ground herbs, with citrus notes of tangerine and lemon zest. The Bara family have a history in the region of Champagne dating back to the 1600s. Today’s owner Chantale is the daughter of the eponymous Paul Bara, who was equal parts historian and winemaker. Paul began selling wine under the Bara name in the 1950s, and penned a book on the people of the village of Bouzy, and their very special fizzy wines. Typical of Paul Bara Champagnes, this wine is powerful and concentrated on the palate, with a pleasing moussey mouthfeel. It is crisp and dry, revealing notes of smoke and minerality as it decants. Look for flavours of orange, lemon, and herbal undergrowth, as well as cream and yeast – it spent a minimum of 5 years ageing on the lees, adding deep textures. Consider pairing this wine with seafood, creamy cheese, or crisp salads.
