Matetic Corralillo Carmenere 2021

18

Cellar for up to 15 years. Decant for an hour or more before serving. A beautiful deep purple in the glass, this Carmenere from Chile begins with a generous nose of black fruits, leather, coffee, smoke, and a hint of toasted nuts. It is made with Carmenere grapes from the Colchagua Valley, the home of Chile’s finest red wines. Jorge Matetic-Celtinja first arrived at the southern tip of Chile in 1892, following a pan-Atlantic journey from the city of Rijeka in Croatia. Today, his namesake continues his legacy as president of the company, marking over 100 years of the Matetic family in the New World. The winery creates a stunning range of cool-climate wines, utilising grapes from the family’s other ancestral home, Asturias in the north of Spain. This is the perfect start for those looking to explore Carmenere, one of the more under-appreciated grapes from the south of France and northern Spain. It shows a perfect balance of freshness and power in the mouth, with strong notes of blackberry, black cherry, cocoa, tobacco, and baking spices. It has a notable long finish, with hints of leather and well-balanced tannins. Enjoy this wine alongside a mature cheese, carpaccio, or a wholesome steak dish.
