Tree Peony 'Wu Jin Yao Hui'

85

Peony Tree Wu Jin Yao Hui translates roughly as Glittering Black Gold in Chinese. It produces an abundance of large, deeply cupped blooms in late spring and early summer, composed of densely packed, silky petals in a glossy burgundy/maroon with purple blotches at the base, highlighted by a central boss of golden stamens. The blooms have a delicate fragrance. 150cm tall and spread (5). Few shrubs can compete with the opulence of tree peonies. Despite their high price, these are true garden showpieces whose beauty will leave you speechless. Although they appear to be divas, they are not difficult to grow if the following conditions are met: a sheltered spot in full sun (or light shade); and fertile, free-draining soil. Tree peonies are fully hardy, generally unbothered by pests or diseases, and do not require routine pruning. They also last a lifetime, producing abundant, dinner-plate sized, lightly fragrant blooms in late spring and early summer for decades. Their flowers are borne on a sturdy framework of upright, woody stems clothed in deep green, divided leaves. Plant height and spread are seasonal. Therefore, we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
