Symphoricarpos doorenbosii 'Magic Berry' (Hedging)

10

Symphoricarpos or Snowberry has long been a go-to shrub for colonising tough ground - quickly developing into a bushy shrub that is laden with long-lived autumn berries. But Symphoricarpos doorenbosii ‘Magic Berry’ brings something extra to the party. Instead of the ordinary white fruits, it offers heavy crops of plump pink berries that stand out beautifully against a backdrop of bluish-green, oval leaves. The fat berries weigh down the arching branches, persisting through cold weather until they drop in late winter.  Symphoricarpos doorenbosii ‘Magic Berry’ makes an excellent dense hedge or background shrub for unpromising areas in sun or shade, coping with all soils including poor ones. It bursts into life at a time when little is on offer, extending interest in the garden by offering a vibrant display through the autumn to winter. Its small, pinkish-white, late summer flowers may not capture much human attention but they are hugely rich in nectar, making ‘Magic Berry’ a great choice for the wildlife garden. Height: 1m (3.2ft). Spread: 1.5m (4.9ft).
