Drink it now or cellar for 10 years. No need to decant before serving. This ‘blanc de blancs’ is a rarity in the village of Ambonnay, a part of Champagne that is best known for its Pinot Noir. Made from 100% Chardonnay, this wine is elegant and deeply creamy, with a beautiful golden colour. It opens up with strong scents of grated lemon, brioche, toasted nuts, and ripe orchard fruits. Chardonnay was first planted in Ambonnay by René Coutier’s father. The Coutier family farm 9 hectares around the village, where the soils are deep and rich in clay. In all, the family sells 80% of their grapes to a local cooperative, so each Coutier vintage is somewhat collectible. They are a great way to start exploring Champagne’s Grand Crus without breaking the bank. In the mouth, it is extremely elegant and well balanced. Notes of citrus zest carry through from the bouquet, alongside tropical bursts of pineapple, pear, freshly baked bread, and clear minerality. It contains a low dose of added sugar, allowing the terroir of Ambonnay to shine through and provide a lively, vinous character. This ‘blanc de blancs’ is an excellent wine for pairing with buttered shellfish, soft cheese, or crispy starters.
