Cellar for up to 20 years. Decant for an hour or more before serving. This is an elegant Spanish red blend, composed of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano, and 5% Viura. Sourced from old, gnarled vines in Rioja, this wine exhibits a classic nose of ripe cranberry and redcurrant, dried herbs, and powerful earthy spices. Bodegas Bhilar is a family enterprise, led by husband and wife duo David Sampedro and Melanie Hickman. It is a small-scale winery, located in Elvillar in Rioja Alavesa. This is one of the higher altitude terroirs within Rioja, defined by its low density of vineyards. The duo take an intensely traditional approach to winemaking, and since 2014, they have even used a horse and plough to farm the fields, rather than tractors. Before bottling, Phincas spent an impressive 36 months ageing in oak, followed by 6 more months in concrete. The oak comes through on the palate, which shows sinewy tannins, fresh acidity, and superb structure. Notes of cherry, plum, tobacco smoke, dried herbs, and mulled wine spice envelope the tongue, leading into a long finish. This is a great affordable option for anybody who wants to explore Rioja. Consider pairing it with game meats, lamb, or smokey stews.
