Melanie Pfister Berg Riesling 2023

26

Cellar for up to 15 years. Decant for up to an hour before serving. Rich notes of apricot, peach, and honey waft from the neck of this bottle, with hints of lemon meringue pie and petroleum. It is a youthful yet ageable Riesling, crafted from four windswept plots on a hill in Alsace. The limestone-rich soils impart a clean mineral edge to the wine, enhanced by 18 months of ageing in steel tanks. Mélanie Pfister is an 8th generation winemaker, who took the family business over from her father in 2006. The winery can be found in the picturesque commune of Dahlenheim, to the west of Strasbourg in the northern section of Alsace. Mélanie began the transition to organic viticulture in 2018, becoming the first non-German to gain the “Fair n Green” sustainable certification. On the palate, the Berg Riesling is light and bone dry, with good levels of acidity and a vibrant character. It showcases under-ripe flavours of green apple, pear, and apricot, thanks to the cool-climate location, with careful hints of flint minerality and herbal honey. It is the perfect wine for pairing with regional food, such as sauerkraut and pork, or a variety of spiced Asian dishes.
