G.D. Vajra Barbera d'Alba 2023

Enjoy now or cellar for up to 10 years. Decant for an hour before serving. G.D. Vajra’s Barbera d'Alba is a gorgeous expression of the Piedmont classic, exhibiting a bouquet of sour red cherries, plums, and violet petals, accompanied by savoury notes of spice and earth. It shows a royal purple hue in the glass. This wine is made from 100% Barbera grapes sourced from different terroirs in the Alba region of Piedmont. Although the winery itself was founded in 1972 by Aldo Vajra, a university student at the time, the family has a much longer history in Northern Italy, dating back approximately 200 years. Aldo was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in Piedmont - across the winery’s 60 hectares, G.D. Vajra has been fully organic since 2019. This Barbera is medium-bodied and juicy on the palate, with swirling flavours of cherry, blackberry, rosehip, and a spicy touch of black pepper. The lively acidity and smooth tannins forge a crisp and crunchy mouthfeel, with a long, aromatic finish. The different vineyard parcels were fermented separately, and the entire blend was aged for 5 months in stainless steel before bottling. This is a versatile wine, perfect for pairing with pizza, tomato pasta, or grilled meats.
