Nervi Conterno Gattinara 2017

77

Cellar for 20 years or more. Decant for 3 hours or more before serving. This is Nervi-Conterno’s trademark wine, bursting with aromas of sour cherry, rose petals, wet stone minerality, and fresh leather. Made from a majority of the majestic Nebbiolo grape, this wine is known for its longevity and will require some breathing time to reveal its full potential. Nervi-Conterno is the oldest producer of Gattinara still operating. The winery has a tapestried history, dating back to 1906, and picks its grapes from some of the finest crus in the region, including Mossino and Valferana. In 2018, the winery was purchased by Roberto Conterno, the head of the esteemed Giacomo Conterno winery, cementing the Conterno family’s place as the kings of Piedmont and intense Nebbiolo wine. This Gattinara is brick red in the glass, with hues of purple. On the palate, it exhibits elevated acidity, fine, velvety tannins, and intense mouthfuls of small red berries. Look for underlying notes of minerality, dried herbs, baking spice, and leather. Part of the magic of this Gattinara is that you don’t have to wait - it can be enjoyed in its youth, or cellared for some time. Consider pairing it with pungent cheese, venison stew, or a charcuterie board.
