Chateau Lafon-Rochet 2014

60

Cellar for 20 years or more. Decant for 2 hours before serving. Lafon-Rochet is a fine Bordeaux wine, appearing with a vivid ruby colour in the glass. On the nose, you can detect aromas of red and purple flowers, cassis, rich blood orange, and graphite minerality. It is a majority Cabernet Sauvignon blend, with 26% Merlot, and 4% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all harvested from the left bank of the Gironde, in the region of Saint-Èstephe. Chateau Lafon-Rochet has a history dating back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest estates in Saint-Èstephe. Since the 1960s, it has been a family business: first being owned by the Tesseron family, who refurbished the chateau and built two new cellars; in 2021, it was acquired by the Lorenzetti family, who have been at the reins ever since. This Bordeaux blend strikes the palate with a medley of black and blue fruits – sour cherry, blackcurrant, cocoa, and baking spice mingle with sharper hints of eucalyptus and liquorice. The tannins are fine-grained, and after 16 months of ageing in 50% new barrels, the oak is subtle and well-integrated. This is an excellent wine for pairing with osso bucco, roast chicken, or mushrooms.
