Enjoy it now, or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant before serving. Verdicchio di Matelica is a rare white grape, grown almost exclusively within the region of Marche in Italy. The Bisci family are one of its biggest fans, crafting a refined range of sharp white wines, stamped with their own unique style. Their estate occupies 25 hectares within the Verdicchio di Matelica DOC region and was founded in 1972, by brothers Giuseppe and Pierino Bisci. Out of the Bisci’s range of Verdicchio wines, Senex is by far the most carefully curated. It is only made in the best vintages, and is crafted with the finest grapes from their “Fogliano” vineyard - the oldest plot on the estate. Following this, the wine is matured for 36 months in concrete tanks, before 12 more months of ageing in the bottle. It begins with a bouquet of orchard fruits, white flowers, and medicinal hints of liquorice and star anise. The soils under Fogliano are clayish and calcareous, imparting a warm, rich mouthfeel to the wine, and a strong vein of minerality. The palate is packed with notes of tropical and citrus fruit, and background flavours of fresh herbs and crushed stone. It is a marvellous wine, and one of the greatest examples of Verdicchio di Matelica that you can buy. Pair it with seafood, soft cheese, or roasted chicken.
