Enjoy it now or cellar for a few more years. No need to decant before serving. Classic Chenin Blanc scents of lemon zest, peach, honey and vanilla mingle on the nose. This wine was sourced from 47-year-old vines in beautiful Durbanville, which is part of the wider Cape Town wine region. The special terroir imparts an intriguing edge of cedar spice, which can be detected as the wine opens up. Orpheus and the Raven was founded in 2013, by wine-maker Etienne Louw and graphic designer Brenden Schwartz. Visuals have always been an important part of this winery, and each bottle features a detailed, baroque-style illustration - making them extra-collectible. Over the years, the pioneering duo have also won multiple gold medals at the Winemag Wine Label Design Awards. The wine itself is also visually stunning, appearing golden yellow in the glass. For white wine, it lies on the fuller-bodied side, with a voluptuous, honeyed mouthfeel and hints of sweetness. Look for notes of butterscotch, ripe peach and oak, coupled with an incisive edge of lemon and bitter almonds. It is a truly excellent example of South African Chenin Blanc, and spent a total of 12 months maturing before release. Enjoy it alongside roast chicken, pasta salad, or goat’s cheese.
