Shumi Iberiuli Mukuzani 2022

26

Cellar for up to 15 years. Decant for up to an hour before serving. This is a dry red wine, composed of 100% Saperavi from the Mukuzani appellation in Kakheti, Georgia. It is packed with aromas of cassis, blackberry and Christmas spices, with hints of cherry stone. Mukuzani is considered to be one of the greatest regions for Saperavi, Georgia’s flagship grape. The appellation calls for the wine to be aged in oak, rather than the traditional qvevri, for a minimum of three years. You can find Shumi Winery’s large estate in the legendary village of Tsinandali, in the heart of Kakheti, Georgia’s most important wine region. As well as being a stellar winery, Shumi is a tourist destination, hosting a fascinating museum of ancient wine artefacts. The winery takes its name from an old Georgian word meaning authentic, unadulterated wine. That rings particularly true in the case of this garnet-coloured red wine. It is dry and full-bodied, exhibiting fruit flavours of dried cherry and fig. They prepare the palate for earthier notes of tobacco, rosemary, cedar and black olives. Mukuzani has a velvety texture overall, with fine tannins and a pleasant, balanced acidity. It evolves into a long finish, with hints of spice and sapid bitterness. A perfect choice for pairing with lamb kebabs, beef stew, or roasted vegetables.
