Doxycycline is an antibiotic with many uses, it can help to fight infection but it can also help prevent malaria when taken at a specific dosage. Although it comes in two different strengths 50mg, and 100mg, it is the latter (100mg) which used as an effective malaria prevention medication. Then continued as a ONCE DAILY dose whilst in that area. Once you leave the area with malaria then you must continue the ONCE DAILY regime for a further 4 weeks. How many shall I order? As with all medication there are some things you need to be aware of, with doxycycline take the following into account: - Avoid taking Zinc, iron or indigestion remedies 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking this medication. - Protect the skin from sunlight – Doxycycline can increase the skins sensitivity to sunlight making it easier to get sun burn. It is important to remember that malaria prevention medication does not necessarily need to be taken if you are in the country where malaria exists. Some countries have certain areas where malaria prophylaxis is recommended and others which don’t require it. If you are going to be in and out of malaria infected areas then it’s probably best to continue taking it for the duration of your travel.
