Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea'

Japanese barberries are well-known for their vibrant foliage and seasonal changes. This spectacular variety is no exception! Citrus-yellow foliage envelops the spreading stems in spring and stays bright gold all summer, though in shaded areas, the leaves may turn more green-yellow as the season progresses. The tiny flowers are difficult to see, but they are high in nectar, attracting a large number of pollinating insects to the garden. As autumn approaches, the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and orange, accompanied by glossy scarlet berries that birds adore. Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea' is a deciduous shrub with a rounded, spreading habit that grows slowly. This is a great plant for brightening up drab borders and attracting wildlife to the garden. Its thorny stems make it an excellent security shrub as well. Height and spread: 150cm (59).
