Pinus wallichiana

170

An award-winning specimen tree with a graceful habit and slender grey-blue needles. Pinus wallichiana is a broad pyramidal tree with tassel-like needles that cascade from each stem and eye-catching cones that emerge upright and blue-green, changing to light brown and pendant as they mature. The lower branches go right down to the ground and remain flattened and the upper branches ascend slightly. The blue-grey needles measure up to 20cm in length and are grouped in bunches of 5, hanging loosely to create a gentle, feathery texture. Young bark emerges smooth and grey-green and becomes dark grey with flaky plates as it ages. Pinus wallichiana tolerates air pollution making it an excellent choice for urban gardens. Maximum height at maturity: 9-15m (30-50ft). Maximum spread at maturity: 6-10m (20-35ft).
