A deciduous tree with spreading tiers of branches that is rounded in shape. Elliptic 15cm (6) leaves are glossy, dark green on top and glaucous beneath, turning a rich red-purple in the autumn. During May and June, large cymes of fragrant, small, white star-shaped flowers up to 18 cm (7) across are produced. In the autumn, spherical blue/black berries appear. As it does require space, this is an excellent specimen tree for a larger garden. It thrives in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained neutral to acidic soil in the sun or partial shade. Hardy to the extreme. Height: 15m (50?). Spread: 15m (50?).
