Metasequoia glyptostroboides

155

A fully hardy specimen tree that is not for the faint hearted as it can grow to an enormous height. Unusually for a conifer, this ancient species is deciduous. Metasequoia provides attractive autumn colour and eye catching peeling, rough bark which becomes more grooved and knobbly with age. The tree carries both male and female cones but these are very small and inconspicuous. Metasequoia glyptostroboides has a fast growth rate initially after planting, then slowing down as the tree grows taller. With a tall, conical habit it makes a majestic focal point for a large estate or public area. Height: 30m (98'). Spread: 5m (16').
